TECHNO DE FORCE

ROUNDUP

YAMAHA HAS ONCE AGAIN upped the stakes in the sportbike technology war, this time with the 2008 YZF-R6. The wailing middle-weight was already a techno-leader with its fly-by-wire throttle system introduced two years ago, and it now takes another step forward with the same Yamaha Chip Controlled Intake variable-length velocity-stack system introduced on the R1 last year.

But that intake trickery is not the only update for 2008. An improved fuel-injection system with two injectors per cylinder and different mapping feeds new pistons that raise compression from 12.8:1 to 13.0:1. Internal friction has been reduced so that more power reaches the rear wheel rather than getting absorbed by the engine’s innards.

On the chassis side, one of the best comer-carving motorcycles on the planet gets a revised “stiffness-balanced” frame, while fork offset has been increased to improve front-end feel. Lower clip-ons pull the rider forward for better braking and handling feel. Internal ribbing and a forged section strengthen the swingarm.

Chassis-tuning possibilities are expanded through a greater range of ride-height adjustment at both ends. Suspension front and rear includes adjusters for both highand low-speed compression damping, as well as for rebound and spring preload.

Another interesting touch? A die-cast magnesium subframe reduces weight “out there” on the bike to improve mass-centralization so important to achieving lightning-quick handling, although claimed . dry weight has increased to 366 pounds, up 9 from last year’s model.

Several different paint schemes will be available for the aerodynamically enhanced bodywork including Liquid Silver,

Raven or Team Yamaha Blue/White, all priced at $9599. A special Cadmium Yellow with Flames is avail -able for an additional $200.
