ROUNDUP

ATTENTIVE READERS WILL REcall that Cycle World's credo, "Too much horse-power is just about enough," has

been a part of the magazine’s philosophy since its inception. And they’ll recall that an important corollary to that philosophy is that a stock motorcycle always needs at least a little development.

For evidence of what happens when those two truths are applied, we offer the following, found within the March,

1965, Cycle World.

Cycle

First, there’s the Honda “Super Duper” Hawk. You remember the Super Hawk, don’t you? A mildmannered little rascal you wouldn’t have been afraid to introduce to your sister? Well, forget that: The “Super Duper” Hawk was a fully faired, 350cc roadracer. With rider Eric Dahlstrom up, it made enough

up, enough power to fling itself around Willow Springs Raceway in 1 minute, 45 seconds, a pretty good time even today.

Somewhat more exotic was a device labeled “The Pump.” This was a dragbike that used a Norton frame of uncertain vintage. What made the bike unusual was that it turned elapsed times of 12.52 seconds,

powered by an Evinrude four-cylinder water-pump engine. Cost? Inventive owner Rick Vesco spent all of $200. —Jon F. Thompson
