Piaggio X1O GT:

Evolution of the Maxi-Scooter

PIAGGIO UNVEILED THE X1 0 GT AT EICMA LAST November, but it was overshadowed by s Quarantasei concept. After riding this new maxi-scooter, I say it deserves a lot more attention.

The X10 is a dramatic evolution of Piaggio’s “armchair” scooters. Previous X8/X9s appear crude and less capable of delivering the comfort, riding pleasure and safety that chief project engineer Alessandro Bagnoli built into the X10. Styling by chief designer Marco Landri is and far from the Flash Gordon themes that dominate the segment.

A 63.9-inch wheelbase might seem excessive, but it helps produce positive results. First, the broad, low seat has room for two with generous stowage underneath.

Second, weight distribution is better balanced than on any other scooter I have ridden. Well-calibrated steering geometry provides precise, neutral handling.

Three versions are available: 125, 350 and 500 generating 15, 33 and 41 claimed horsepower. I tested the sohc, four-valve, liquid-cooled 330cc model, which, I believe, is the best-balanced of the three Singles.

It is also the most-advanced engine in its class, producing 23.8 foot-pounds of torque at 6250 rpm. Acceleration from nearly any legal speed is strong. The ABSand tractioncontrol-equipped machine will top 90 mph and deliver an excellent 82 miles per gallon.

Piaggio currently has no plans to bring the X10 GT to the U.S. —Bruno dePrato
