UPS AND DOWNS

UP: To the good folks at HarleyDavidson of Glendale (California) for raising $825,000 on its Love Ride 7 Muscular Dystrophy benefit. An estimated 9000 riders, pledging a minimum of $40 each, showed up at the Calamigos Ranch in the Santa Monica Mountains on about 7500 bikes to hear David Crosby and Jackson Browne sing, ogle a variety of Harley women, wolf down ribs and potato salad, and just generally bask in a gorgeous Southern California afternoon. A good time for a good cause.

DOWN: To mega-rocker David Crosby who, the very Sunday following the outstandingly successful Love Ride, crashed his Harley while on a ride near his Encino, California, home, breaking a collarbone, a leg and an ankle. His Hog’s throttle stuck open, Crosby is said to have offered as an excuse for his mishap.

UP: To all of you with Brit-bikes and black leather in the bloodstream, but enough, already! Response to November's “Return of the Rockers” story, in the form of phone calls to several of the Vintage Rockers Cycle Club members’ places of business, has been so strong that at least one has been threatened with loss of employment. Further inquiries should be addressed to Cycle World. We’ll forward them to the VRCC.

UP: To Bob Karolevitz, for showing us the way we were. In his book Yesterday's Motorcycles, Karolevitz has compiled hundreds of ads featuring U.S. motorcycles and accessories from the 1 930s and prior. Our favorite is for the 5-horsepower 1912 Yale, and starts out “Pigs is Pigs But There Is A Difference In Drop Forgings.” A bargain at $9.45 (which includes shipping), the large-format, paperback book is a must for your moto-

library. It’s available from Dakota Homestead Publishers, Route l, Box l 34, Mission Hill, SD 57046.

UP: To grand prix stars Wayne Rainey, Kevin Schwantz, Randy Mamola, John Kocinski, Niall Mackenzie, to Kenny Roberts, and to Brit racers Trevor Nation and Steve Spray for being among those

who participated in The Day of Champions charity meeting at Brands Hatch in England, to benefit the Save the Children Foundation. The event, described by the British paper Motor Cycle News as “a cross between a village fete and a club roadrace,” reportedly raised approximately $80,000 for STC’s Southern African medical-support plan.

DOWN: To the Montana Supreme Court, which recently upheld the drunken-driving conviction of a Montana man who was stopped by police while pushing his disabled motorcycle down a street. Although the man was not riding the bike, and although the bike’s engine was not running, the court held that he was in control of the machine and therefore subject to the state’s drunkendriving statutes.

If you come across a motorcycle-related item that you think should be singled out for an U P or DOWN, send the information to CtV Roundup, 853 W. 17th St., Costa Mesa, CA 92627.
