1991 BMWs: Bavarian cream

ROUNDUP

CAN IT BE THAT TIME MOVES more slowly in Bavaria than elsewhere, or is it just that Munich's motorcycle mavens march to a different mazurka? Whatever it is, 1991 for the proud old firm of BMW isn't much different from 1990, with pretty much the same motorcycles on offer this year as last. But there are a couple of im portant and signifidant exceptions. these to be found at opposite ends of BMW's model lineup. The most noticeable addition to the BMW line is the all-new K 1 OORS. tested in this very issue, a hybrid that uses KI running gear mated to traditional RS bodywork. The K I, in all its avant garde glory, is unchanged for this year, except for slightly softer fork com pression damping. and once again, at $ 1 3,290. tops the BMW price list. The K 1 OOLT dresser, at $ 12,990, is not far behind. If the nuoi'o K100RS is BMW's new-for-this-year bike, the R 1 00, back after an absence of seven years. is the company's old-for this-year bike. This is a basic stan dard, with twin discs up front and a rear drum brake, though it is equipped with BMW's Monoarm rear suspension. Where there's an R 100. there's also an R 1 OORT. a

full-dress version of the Boxer which has been a staple of the BMW line since 1978. Like its standardized brother, this machine is available with a range of options that includes auxiliary lights and heated handgrips. The R100GS and R100GS Paris-Dakar models remain in the Boxer line, but find themselves newly equipped this year with full-

floating front-brake rotors, heightadjustable windscreens, new instruments, K-series handlebar switchgear and Bilstein gas shocks with damping and preload adjust ments. The K75 line checks in not only with the least expensive bike in this year's BMW range-that would be the $6 190 K75-but with the availability of anti-lock braking on the K75S and RT. models, an op tion that'll rock your checkbook to the tune of$1 100. So: As we said, not a lot of change. But what change there is, is interesting, resulting in models which nicely round out the I 99 1 BMW line.
