Formula 1 Pasos
With Ducati’s Paso breaking all sales records for the Bologna firm in export markets around the world, the shapely 750 V-Twin is also fast becoming a cult motorcycle amongst a very select group of people: the drivers of the Formula 1 Grand Prix car circus.
Just as more than 70 percent of the drivers for the main FI factory teams drive Mercedes-Benz 500SEC coupes, several of them have now either bought or placed orders for Paso motorcycles. First to take delivery was former World Champion Nelson Piquet from Brazil, nowadays driving for the Williams team whose race-car engines are, of course, supplied by none other than Honda. At the recent San Marino GP, held in May at the Imda Circuit, not more than 40 Miles from Ducati’s Bologna factory, Piquet suffered a massive accident in practice that left him relatively unscathed but unable to race his car due to various minor injuries. Instead, the Brazilian thrilled the “tifosi” (local fans) on race day by putting in a parade lapon his new Ducati Paso.
