ANNESLEY AND POGUE WIN LOUISVILLE I.D.B.A. SHOWDOWN
Kenny Annesley set a new motorcycle eighth mile E.T. record of 4.96 sec. during the I.D.B.A.’s Kawasaki Supernationals at Ohio Valley Dragway. Annesley broke his old record, set last season, of 5.02 sec. The new mark was established during the final round of Top Fuel when Annesley
challenged the blown XS 1100 Yamaha single of Jim Bernard. The R.C. Engineering/ Yamaha entry of Tesón/Bernard clocked 5.08 sec. at 142.40 mph in the final. Annesley recorded top mile per hour of the meet. 148.27 mph.
Hole-shot is the name of the game in drag racing. That’s exactly what Ken Blackburn did to Motorcycle Unlimited’s Sam Wills to claim the Super Eliminator win. The two Kawasaki fuel bike riders each had consistent passes in the mid 5.40’s and were very equal competition. Blackburn won it at the start. He beat Wills by leaving the lights micro seconds quicker and turning a faster mile per hour figure. Times were 5.46 at 132.35 for Wills: Blackburn slower, but winning, 5.47 at 135.33.
Sid Pogue put the moves on Terry Vance
in Pro Stock. It was heads-up racing all the way as Pogue’s Kawasaki Zl-R out motored the GS1000 Suzuki of Vance. Pogue was also top qualifier, with Vance No. 2. Final times were Pogue 5.70 at 123.11 to Vance’s 5.78 at 121.62.
Charles Israel backed up his win at Memphis with a repeat at Louisville. The Smithville, Georgia racer powered his turbocharged Kawasaki dragster to the win in Pro Comp. Israel faced Larry Muscik’s turbo Kawasaki in the finals. Both racers recorded exactly the same E.T. of 5.68 seconds. However, Israel went through the win lights 3 mph faster, 126.05 mph to 129.49. —Joel Breault
