YAMAHA '69

Yamaha’s line for 1969 is headed by the successful 250-cc scrambler, the DT-1B. This dual purpose machine has many features to please rough country riders and street riders alike. The Ceriani-type front fork allows more than 6 in. of travel, the speedometer has a trip odometer which can be reset for enduros, and for the serious dirt rider, there is a new tapped head and plug for a compression release. Also for the competition rider, a 21-in. front wheel and special fender are available. Many of these features are shared by the smaller enduro models, the 175-cc CT-1 and the 125-cc AT-1.

For the big bike enthusiast, Yamaha offers the 350-cc R-3. This model has received some eye-catching restyling to augment its strong performance and fine handling. Power is rated at 36 bhp at 7000 rpm, while maximum torque is a a healthy 28 ft./lb. at 6000 rpm.

Another new member of the Yamaha stable is the AS2-C. This 125-cc street scrambler should prove quite popular with those who desire a high-performance lightweight for street and offroad use. The 6.3 in. of ground clearance and 9.4 ft./lb. of torque allow easy navigation of mountain trails.

The Yamaha L5-T is a 100-cc singlecylinder machine with a rotary intake valve. The “Trailmatic” transmission is a unique item. It basically is a three-speed transmission with a high and low range. The 97-cc engine produces 8 bhp and 6.87 ft./lb. of torque. Its 6.8:1 compression ratio indicates an “unfussy” fuel appetite, a plus for south-of-the-border trips. All-weather starts are assured by both electric and kick-starting methods. The L5-T features an engine bash plate, a large carrier for game or camping gear, a Forestry Dept.-approved spark arrestor, and a 1 2-V electrical system.

HOT SPARK FOR HODAKAS

There is another hop-up item available to Hodaka owners. It is a transistorized ignition system that does not use contact breakers. The unit also comes with a lighting coil, which means that it is not limited to the race course, but can be used on street machines. The new system is color coded for easy installation, and the importer claims that it develops a healthy spark from 500 rpm up to 12,500 rpm. The complete capacitive discharge unit is manufactured by the Kokusan Denki Co. in Japan and is available through North American Imports, Dept. CW-6, P.O. Box 621, Garden Grove, CA 92642.
