2012 HONDA NC700X

ROUNDUP

New parallel-Twin adventure crossover coming to the U.S.

FIRST SHOWN AT THE EICMA MOTORCYCLE show last fall in Milan, the NC700X is a member of Honda’s new three-model “crossover” family of 670cc parallel-Twin machines. (The naked NC700S and scooter-like Integra are unlikely to come to the U.S.)

Honda bills the NC700X as an adventure-styled model, but the key word in that description is “styled.” The 700X joins the growing list of other bikes in this segment that look the part but really are broad-purpose machines designed to satisfy a wide variety of riding needs, the least of which is actual “adventure” riding. To a certain extent, models like the NC700X are becoming the new breed of “standard” bike, almost like the rebirth of the “Universal Japanese Motorcycle.”

Powering this latest UJM from Honda is a brand-new, 670cc liquid-cooled, parallelTwin engine with a single overhead cam, four valves per cylinder and a counterbalancer. With radically laid-down cylinders, the Twin nestles snugly in a low-slung tube frame. Fuel is carried under the long, stepped seat, with the filler accessed by flipping up the passenger pad. A watertight, locking storage compartment is located where the fuel tank is normally found. The suspension isn’t Dakarready, but its longish travel (6 in. front and rear) should be up for at least a hint of adventurous riding.

Accessories include color-matched side cases and top trunk, plus crash bars, LED fog lights, a 12-volt DC power socket, a tall windscreen, heated grips and a centerstand.

Two versions of the NC700X will be available: One with a traditional sixspeed transmission, the other with an improved second-generation Dual Clutch Transmission like on the VFR1200F, allowing full-auto operation or paddle shifting in manual mode. Honda hopes DCT will attract new riders intimidated by the standard bike’s manual clutch and gearbox.

All in all, the NC700X looks poised to be an attractive all-rounder and, with the optional luggage, even a decent sport-tourer.

Expected in dealerships this summer, the standard NC700X is priced at $6999. MSRP for the DCT/Combined Anti-lock Braking System model has not yet been set.
