HONDA’S SUPERSPORT ABS

Anti-lock brakes on motorcycles have long been reserved for the more conservative end of the market spectrum. Touring bikes, yes, full-on sportbikes, no. Until now. Honda Europe announced that both the 2009 CBR1000RR and CBR600RR will be available with optional Combined ABS. Further, American Honda confirmed that both models will be offered stateside. Details were limited at presstime, but Honda stated that “brake by wire” technology is used to interpret rider input and optimize distribution of front and rear braking force. The system is tuned to be as unobtrusive as possible for improved stability during hard braking. A key benefit is reduced front-end dive for added control, while in high-performance riding scenarios, the system’s ultra-lightweight components invoke ABS very late in the cycle during forceful braking to allow short stopping distances.
