Ups & Downs
DOWN: To 2008 West Coast Supercross Lites Champion Jason Lawrence for not being able to keep out of trouble this past summer. J-Law was issued a suspended $25,000 penalty contingent upon the successful completion of one year’s probation after an incident in which he rolled his mechanic’s rental car during Round 3 of the AMA Motocross Championship in Wortham, Texas. The final straw came three rounds later on the July 4th weekend at Red Bud in Buchanan, Michigan, where Lawrence was arrested for disorderly conduct following a fight with an unnamed individual. In addition to suspending Lawrence for “unacceptable behavior that is detrimental to the sport,” the AMA imposed the hefty $25K fine.
UP: To Chris Sedgwick, for thinking outside the (light) box. The Las Vegas-based photographer has created a photo package for Sport Rider/ Level 1 attendees of Freddie Spencer’s High-Performance Riding School (www.fastfreddie.com), for which Sedgwick is the official shooter. The package includes a class portrait, track action, various shots of the school and-get this!—an image of the student customized into a faux fullsize magazine cover complete with UPC code, on-sale date and newsstand pricing. Costs for the two-day schools start at $2395.
UP: To Racing 2 Save Lives, for coming up with a great way to raise money for children’s charities. This past July, more than 150 riders took part in a four-day event held at Miller Motorsports Park in Toole, Utah. For a minimum donation, riders were able to participate in track days on several different layouts of the worldclass racetracks. With an average individual contribution of $300, the fundraiser netted in excess of $30,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundations of Utah and Colorado, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and Larry H. Miller Charities. Visit www. racing2savelives.org for more information on future events.
