CW EVALUATIONS

LISTENING TO MUSIC WHILE RIDING A motorcycle is next to impossible using the cheap “earbuds” that come with many pocket-sized MP3 players. Beyond parking-lot speeds, even when wearing a quality full-face helmet, wind roar drowns out volume levels that would be deafening in a quiet off-bike environ-

ment. On the highway, discerning the difference between Garth Brooks and Guns N’ Roses is a lost cause. What’s a bike-riding music buff to do?

Colorado-based Big Ear makes a wide range of custom-molded noiseprotection and stereo products, several of which are aimed at motorcyclists.

About the size of the tip of \ your thumb, the top-of-the-line\

BE-2s have hard acrylic outer shells, dual transducers with pas-

sive crossovers and a 50-inch cable that ends with a standard 3.5mm plug.

Big Ear products are not available in stores. Sales take place at motorcycle

events and dealerships, where trained pros take impressions of your outer ear canals using a proprietary Sani-Mold process. These impressions serve as the basis for the molds used to create the final product, which is then mailed directly to your residence.

Fit is subjective, of course, \ but in our experience, the BE-2s are so comfortable they can be worn for hours at a stretch. Sound quality is equally impressive, I though wind noise creeps past at higher speeds. (AcI cording to the company, the soft-vinyl, single-transducer $300 BEl-Cs perform better

\

in this respect.) Still, if you really enjoy riding with music, there’s no better inear option. □
