CELEBRATING SPORTSTERS

Fans of Harley-Davidson’s Sportster just got their calendar filled this summer: The AMA announced that the Sportster, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, will be the featured marque at Vintage Motorcycle Days, held at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, July 27-29. A select group of early and significant machinesincluding earlier K-model siblings—will be chosen for a special display. Have a sweet KR, XR, KK or Sporty? Call Will Stoner at 614/856-1900, ext. 1227, for information on displaying your bike.

NITRO CIRCUS

Looking for extreme dirt action? “Lock ’N Load” is the latest video from the Nitro Circus crew, which is basically Travis Pastrana and all of his cronies crashing their way around the world. It’s not just Jackass: The Movie meets two wheels, though, as the DVD also features highlights of the 2006 AMA SX and MX series, with a special focus on Ricky Carmichael’s career, as well as Red Bull’s X-Fighters in Mexico and Spain, World Extreme Enduros featuring Jeremy McGrath in Erzberg, Ryan Capes’ world record jump of 310 feet and, of course, the 2006 X-Games. LEGAL AGAIN

Honda Spray Cleaner and Polish is finally emissions-legal again in the nine states where the V0C content of its propellant had rendered it unsellable last year. We got a case of the new stuff and it is impossible to distinguish the performance of this latest formula from the old-except that this one seems to spray more evenly. So we can clean in peace, once again. The kind folks at Plexus were nice enough in the interim to send us a few cans of their excellent cleaner, pointing out it was legal all along...

SPORT SINGLE

Cagiva USA, importers of MV Agusta and Husqvarna motorcycles, unveiled last December a new concept version of the entrylevel Cagiva Mito sportbike. Formerly powered by a 125cc twostroke, this latest model features a 60-horsepower, 500cc four-stroke Single taken from a Husky dirtbike. Lightweight, machined-alloy wheels update the classic Ducati 916-inspired look on the 260pound machine. Target price if the bike reaches production would be between $7000 and $9000. Love it? Hate it? MOATES PASSES

Marty Moates, 49, died this past December in what has been termed a suicide. Moates is credited with “breaking the spell” of the then-dominant motocrossers with his 1980 win at the USGP at Southern California’s Carlsbad Raceway on a privateer Yamaha. It was the firstever win for an American in the 500cc class. He later went on to help co-found the No Fear apparel company and remained active in the motorcycle industry, as well as performing charitable work for the Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital.
