TRIUMPH'S TRANSFORMATION

Pie in the sky or coming to a dealer near you? That’s the question posed by this computer illustration of a possible new “character” sportbike model from Triumph. Likely to displace 800cc from its three-cylinder engine, a bike similar to this was said to be spotted testing recently overseas.

The idea of such a sportbike would be in keeping with Triumph’s new direction. “When we do something, we’re going to do it in a distinctly Triumph way,” said a spokesperson. “Today we wouldn’t do the TT600. It’s an iniine-Four 600, and there are four other manufacturers who do that very well.”

Triumph’s current plan has been the introduction of two new models each year-witness the Rocket III and Thruxton last year, followed by the 1050cc Speed Triple and Sprint this year.

“We want to give consumers a distinctive reason to buy a Triumph,” added the spokesperson. An English three-cylinder alternative to a Ducati 749 would seem like a good reason! -Mark Hoyer
