MSR Windstopper Jersey
CW EVALUATION
Low blow, in a good way
YOU SAY IT’S CHILLY OUTSIDE, BUT YOU don’t want the added bulk and limited mobility of a jacket? Or it’s freezing out, and you just need an extra layer? Malcolm Smith Racing has you covered-literally-with its Windstopper Jersey.
Like a vented soccer shirt, it looks light and airy. In other words, not at all like something that would keep you warm. But this simply styled jersey is made with polyester layers that surround a thin membrane of the patented Windstopper fabric, made by the people who brought you Gore-Tex. Elbow pads are even sewn in for good measure.
Available in solid gray, red or blue, in S-XXL sizes, the jersey matches typical MX gear and can be worn alone or over a T-shirt. The manufacturer claims the Windstopper material allows moisture to escape five times faster than Gore-Tex, which, to our armpits, certainly seems accurate. This
snug jersey keeps the wearer so warm it’s easy to work up a sweat even in cool weather. And wind? What wind?!
When it gets downright cold, you can use the Windstopper Jersey as an extra layer under a riding jacket. It keeps you as toasty as a sweatshirt does, only without the bulk. Plus, if the mercury rises, it balls up small enough to fit in a jacket pocket.
Furthermore, it doesn’t seem to wear out. We’ve been using one in the winter months for the past four years, and it’s still as good as new. Since the durable Windstopper Jersey makes it so easy to brave the cold, there’s always one in our gearbag. □
