INDIAN'S SPORTING SCOUT

In a marvelous, cacophonic uproar, a half-dozen Indian Scouts descended upon the sleepy central California town of Carmel. For lunch.

The view was glorious, the tarmac sweeping and the sandwiches tasty. Such was the stuff of the recently rejuvenated Indian press launch.

Enough with waxing poetic. What’s the “411” on the small-fendered 2001 Scout? Lighter and sportier than the flagship Chief, it uses its ancestor’s 1442cc ohv V-Twin, S&S carburetor and five-speed transmission. Apart from styling, the Scout differs from the Chief in the chassis department, at the heart of which is a single-downtube steel frame and camouflaged dual shocks that absorb bumps from beneath the gearbox.

Approximately 5000 Scouts will be produced in Indian’s Gilroy, California, factory. Price is $18,900.
