MOTO-MASTERPIECES

MOTORCYCLE OILS aren't just for lubri cation anymore. In fact, some oils can be found decorating hallways and liv ing-room walls. Confused? No need. The oils in question are of the painting variety, and motorcycles are the sub ject matter.

One artist specializing in such renderings is Jeff Watts, 27, whose forte is depicting Harley-Davidsons and their owners in the moody style of the Flemish masters like Rem brandt. "I try to capture the collective essence of the owner and his bike," says Watts, whose portraits can cost from $1500 to $10,000 depending on the size (from 12 x 16 inch es to 36 x 48 inches).

Relatively new to motorcy cle portraits, Watts is no stranger to painting. His for mative years were spent in his father's art studio, where near by colleagues turned young Watts on to Harleys. "I re member the excitement I used to feel as they roared past," he recalls. "I presently own a 1948 Panhead and am working on a custom FXR."

These days, though, most of

the artist's time is dedicated to working on canvas, which is why he started Mototech Por traiture (1906 Avocado Ranch Rd., El Cajon, CA 92019; 619/447-1419). "My goal is to elevate Harley art to a new level of respectability and col lectibility," he says.

Rembrandt would be proud.
