Get set for deep lean

FEW MOTORCYCLES ARE AS SHARP A sporting tool as Yamaha’s YZF-R1. But even the R1’s corner-carving prowess can be improved upon with the right aftermarket performance bits. For example, when we first rode our stock Yammie at the racetrack, we noticed the footpegs touched down in corners a little too easily-even with the threaded feelers removed. This didn’t pose a safety concern beY cause the stock pegs are hinged, but it was annoying and hard on boot toes.

DETAILS Pro-Tek 5138 W. Hurley Pond Rd. Farmingdale, NJ 07727 732/938-6444 Price........................$380 Ups Improved cornering clearance Six anodized color options Downs ▼ No warning before grinding hard parts ▼ Street applications require $75 brakelight pressure-switch kit

Before tackling the track again, we installed a set of Pro-Tek Rearsets. CNC-machined from 6061-T6 aluminum, they added to the bike’s sleek appearance and positioned the rider’s feet an inch higher and an inch farther to the rear. A longer shift-linkage rod and attractive stainless-steel bolts are included, while the pressure-switch kit required to retain rear brakelight operation is sold separately.

Mounting the Pro-Teks was a simple 10-minute job, and they lived up to their hype upon return to the track. Although we did grind the left engine cover and stock exhaust canister, neither solid-mounted peg grazed the tarmac all day. We heard no complaints of cramped ergos from testers who logged several hours in the saddle, and the Pro-Teks’ aesthetics received compliments from other R1 owners.

With applications for most latemodel sportbikes, Pro-Tek has got you-and your bike-pegged. □
