No Toil Air Filter Kit
CW EVALUATION
Dirty deeds done dirt cheap
WHEN IT COMES TO DIRTBIKE MAINTE-
nance, there’s nothing more disgusting than cleaning a dirty air filter. It’s a time-consuming pain that can leave oil and grime all over you and your garage.
Well, forget everything you thought you knew about cleaning filters, because No Toil has a solution that seems too good to be true. The No Toil kit comes with solvent-free cleaner, and non-petroleum-based oil and rim grease. All three are nontoxic and biodegradable, and the company even claims they increase horsepower. Oh, and a No Toil foam air filter with applications fitting most late-model dirtbikes is thrown in for free.
We used No Toil with both new and used filters for several months. Typically, the oil was good for five services, and the grease and cleaner went even farther. Filters still got dirty, but nothing-not even silt-got past. And when it was time for cleaning, the No Toil really shined.
We used the traditional water-in-abucket method with the recommended amount of cleaner. After one rinsing (not two or three) and very little wringing, filters
looked brand-new. There was no residue or leftover oil. Even when they dried, they were dry—not sticky or oily.
Re-oiling was a simple matter of kneading the filter with the oil. (Because the alcohol in the oil evaporates, be sure to do this in a well-ventilated area.) It gets quite tacky, spreads nicely and holds. Plus it washes off hands without a fight.
Finally, smearing on the rim grease successfully seals the filter lip-maybe a little too well. One bike was left with its filter
in place for several months, and the stuff nearly glued the filter to the airbox. As for the horsepower claims, we ran a 1999 Yamaha YZ125 on the dyno with the No Toil and then with a regular petroleum filter oil. The result was a slight increase, about V2 horsepower.
Although some things are too good to be true, No Toil’s filter treatment isn’t one of them. It turned a dreaded chore into a simple task. ^
