25 YEARS AGO SEPTEMBER, 1973
Harley-Davidson's FLH Electra Glide shared space on this month's cover with two other American icons-Mom and apple pie. Fully rigged with Harley's "King of the Road" package, the Electra Glide sported windshield, spotlights, front and rear safety bars, a luggage rack, "Pak-King" fiberglass saddlebags with chrome-plated guards, twin rear-view mirrors and a small leather bag mounted behind the lower portion of the windscreen. The editors called it "one of the top choices of the rider who wants a big, dependable motorcycle, one which will provide him with many years and many thousands of miles of riding."
• Also tested in this issue was Honda's ground-breaking CR1 25M Elsinore. The flyweight motocrosser was praised for its "really amazing" throttle re sponse, precise controls, exact ing brakes, low level of engine vibration and eye-catching styling. "Honda's new CR125 does everything superbly," wrote the story's author. "It is without a doubt the finest-handling small bore we have ever ridden."
• Criticism once again surround ed the annual running of the Isle of Man IT. Despite improvements to the infamous, 37.75-mile, pub lic road circuit, including much pavement resurfacing, race en tries were down. Climaxing the week, the Senior IT was won by Suzuki-mounted Jack Findlay, who pocketed $2500 for his event-top ping efforts. Of the 70 starters, only 26 managed to finish.
