EVENTS AMUNDO

Is garage fever eatin’ away at your very soul? You want to go for a ride, but OI’ Man Winter (or EI Niño, or that pesky engine rebuild) won’t let ya? Worry not, dear reader, you’ve come to the right place. What follows is Cycle World's handy-dandy, unabridged, unauthorized and eminently arbitrary guide to upcoming motorcycle events. Make plans now.

■ Billed as the largest ride and rally on the East Coast, the 11th-annual Ride for Life takes place Sunday, May 3. Based at the Harley plant in York, Pennsylvania, the ride raises money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association; in the past 10 years, more than $3 million has been collected. Some 6000 riders are expected this year. Things-to-do include demo rides, midway games, field events and live entertainment—which as we all know is better than the alternative. Info: 610/391-1977.

■ If you’re a disciple of the Orangeand-Black, you need to be in Milwaukee this summer for Harley-Davidson’s 95th Anniversary Reunion. In fact, if you haven’t already got tickets for the big concert bash on June 13, you may be too late-close to 70,000 tickets have already been sold. Move thy backside down to thy friendly H-D shopkeep for more information.

■ Calling all Wild Ones for the secondannual Hollister Rally, June 2-5, goal being to take over the sleepy central California town for a few days. Last year, more than 30,000 riders showed up, with nary a rape, a pillage or a riot in sight-rumor is Marlon Brando showed up as Johnny, got bored and caught the first 747 back to Tahiti. Don’t you believe it! Info: 800/538-7035.

■ Ya gotta love an event that proudly proclaims, “For $40, you get free camping, Saturday dinner and live entertainment, the World Famous Thunder Ride, rally pin and sticker, Fast Eddie’s Magical Twisty Tour and about 800 friends you didn’t know you had.” Fun-o-rama. Bad news is you have to go to Canada for the festivities; the Foley Campgrounds, 8 kilometers south of Parry Sound in Ontario, to be annoyingly exact. That’s where the 16th-annual Sportbike Rally takes place, June 3-4. One of the featured attendees is Michelle Duff, who used to be 1960s GP sensation Mike Duff, but that’s a whole ’nother story... MO" FAT CHICKS!

Like food? Like motorcycles?

Meet Jennifer Peterson and Clarissa Dickson Wright, two flamboyant British television chefs who call themselves the Two Fat Ladies. Charmingly peculiar, the women travel the English countryside seeking ingredients for their favorite recipes on/in a Triumph Thunderbird with Watsonian sidecar. Already stars in England, they have brought their successful cooking show stateside, courtesy of cable TV’s Food Network. “Two Fat Ladies” airs Saturday and Sunday nights at 7 p.m. and 11 p.m., EST.

TOURING, Y’ALL

You don’t need to eat grits or speak with a Southern drawl to have a hankerin’ to tour the scenic Southeast. That said, Cycle-Paths has put together the “3-in-1 Map,” so named for its inclusion of parts of North Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia. County and state roads are splayed out in all their curvaceous splendor, major highways are identified and Forest Service trails are marked.

Cost, with shipping and handling, is $6.75. Contact Cycle-Paths, 375 Martin Ward Fid., Tunnel Hill, GA 30755; 706/935-5851.

RIDE THE SOUTHWEST

If the Southeast isn’t your cup o’ tea, how ’bout the Southwest? “Great Roads of the Southwest,” now available from Freedom Tours, is a 30minute video exploring the twisty backroads of Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and Arizona. Not so coincidentally, these are the states in which Freedom Tours guides motorcycle excursions. For a copy, send $14.95 plus $3 shipping and handling to Freedom Tours, RO. Box 848, Longmont, CO 80502; 800/643-2109.
