DUCK QUOTES
Watch out, world! Ducati has a head of steam and is piling on the coals. Under new ownership,
production is up, spare parts are available, the work force is growing, new models are in the pipeline and a Harley-esque owner homecoming is planned for this summer— heck, there’s even “Ducati Manhattan,” a retail store just off Times Square in New York City. Here’s what company principals have to say.
-Ian Falloon
New CEO Federico Minoli on the importance (and costs) of Ducati going racing: “I am happy for Fogarty to earn 10 times what I get. Ducati has always been about winning races.”
Marco Montemaggi, curator of the company’s new 10,000-square-foot museum located on the second floor of the Bologna factory: “There will be a glass floor so as to see the production lines underneath.”
Pierre Terblanche, designer of the new 900SS, on future styling: “It seems to me that the beautiful Ducatis happened by acci-
dent and were the product of passion. I would like to see engines return to the days when they were part of the aesthetics of the motorcycle. Even with design limitations, we can make the engines better looking.”
Ingenere Massimo Bordi, on the impending production of the single-cylinder Supermono streetbike: “The next Mono will be 595cc, with a bore of 103mm and a slightly longer, 71.5mm stroke.”
Race chief Claudio Domenicali, coyly speculating on the life expectancy of the desmoquattro Superbike engine, now more than 10 years old: “We have made some big steps-especially with the electronicsfor this year, and there are still many possibilities for improvement. Still, Slight and the Honda will be difficult to beat.”
