HYPERCYCLE SUZUKI GSX-R750
At home in the pits or parking lot
YOU WON’T SEE A TURBOCHARGER LURKING BENEATH THE lightweight Air-Tech bodywork on the HyperCycle GSX-R750, and the bulbous tailsection is free of any sneaky nitrous lines curling from its underside. No, HyperCycle team owner Carry Andrew knew exactly what he had in mind for the ultimate streetbike: a Superbike with lights.
“When I go riding, I want to do so without having to charge a (nitrous) bottle, or worrying about reliability,” says Andrew. “That’s why I’m so attached to normally aspirated bikes.”
In working toward an ideal engine/chassis combination, Andrew knew his motor had to pull hard throughout the rev range; a peaky mill would surely suffer in the XS street testing. Air-Tech ducts and custom airbox direct airflow to four Mikuni TDM carburetors (available through Yoshimura), which lead to a genuine Superbike-spec engine.
Many of the major components in the engine are raceonly Suzuki factory kit parts, including the valves, valve springs, high-compression pistons and carefully timed camshafts. Andrew ports the head and dresses the seats with a competition valve job. Pankle titanium connecting rods and a Falicon Super Crank tie up the bottom end.
Due to the constantly changing conditions found throughout our test, Andrew wanted a chassis capable of being fine-tuned. The Öhlins fork and shock were revalved by PPS, and work in conjunction with an extended swingarm and Attack Racing triple-clamps for added stability. Together, these pieces create an infinitely tunable chassis that can be dialed-in to perfection.
Dunlop D207s mounted on Performance Machine wheels provide the grip needed for fast laps around HPCC’s road course, and six-piston PM calipers with 12.6-inch floating rotors slow things to a sane pace.
“I like to play it safe,” adds Andrew. “There’s an unrealistic amount of time in preparing the wiring and brackets, just so they all work. I have about a week in the engine, and a week in the chassis.” He figures his XS Superbike is worth close to $50,000, and after riding it for four days and seeing how refined it is, we’d say it’s worth every penny.
