UPS AND DOWNS

Victor McLaglen Motor Corps MOTORCYCLE STUNT AND DRILL TEAM

UP: To the Victor McLaglen Motor Corps, for 60 years of entertaining crowds with its amazing precision stunts. Based in Southern California, the award-winning corps (P.O. Box 845, Bellflower, CA 90706; 310/920-2768) has performed some 2000 times since its inception in 1935.

UP: To Jonathon Kleman, a 14year-old from Stevens Point, Wisconsin, for his sound financial judgment. Kleman won $500,000 in a contest created to draw attention to the nation’s new food-labeling requirements. Asked what he would do with the money, Kleman responded, “I’m going to buy a motorcycle and go to college." Smart man.

UP: To Coast Hotels and Resorts, for its progressive attitude toward motorcyclists. As David Allen from Ottawa, Canada, notes, throughout its hotels, Coast prominently displays a picture of Jack Munro, chairman of the Forest Alliance of British Columbia, sitting on his Harley dresser. “I swear by Coast Hotels,” reads the caption at the bottom of the photo.

DOWN:: To Hair Cuttery, a Washington D.C.-area chain of hair salons, for an attitude that’s less enlightened than that of Coast Hotels. Hair Cuttery has a radio advertisement that states, “People with long hair do get their hair cut, even bikers.” CW reader, James Godfrey, who regularly hears the ad, said it best: “I thought this stereotypical image had faded years ago, but I guess not."
