UPS AND DOWNS

UP: To roadracer Nancy Delgado, for doing her part to improve the image of motorcycling. Delgado, who contests the AMA Twin Sports series, was featured in a recent edition of USA Today. “A lot of guys work hard (at racing), but that’s not enough. We’re in a recession. You have to promote,” said the 27-yearold. “People say I’m getting attention only because I’m a woman. I say that’s fine, but I’m getting exposure for the sport, too.”

UP: To Mike and Dianne Traynor, for organizing the Ride for Kids program that raised $401,484 towards the fight against pediatric brain tumors. For their efforts, the couple received the AMA’s Hazel Kolb Brighter Image Award. This year, 13 Ride For Kids events are scheduled. For more information, call the Ride For Kids hotline at 800/673-7220 or contact your local Honda dealer.

DOWN: To Illinois Governor Jim Edgar, for vetoing a bill that would have protected rider-education funds from being used in other areas of the state’s budget. Fortunately, the state legislature overrode the governor’s veto, ensuring that the funds would be used as intended.

UP: To Steve Weeke, assignment editor for CBS-Television affiliate KPIX in San Francisco, for his news report on riding a motorcycle in the City by the Bay. Fitted with a helmet-mounted camera, Weeke rode his '83 Kawasaki GPz1100 through the city’s densely automobiled streets, providing a rider’s perspective, he said, of the “standard things you watch out for to stay alive while on a motorcycle.” The story was part of KPIX’s annual “Beat the Backup” traffic campaign, in which commuters are urged to take alternative transportation.
