USED-BIKE BUYER’S GUIDES

For the average motorcyclist considering the purchase of a used machine, finding information on a particular model can be a hassle.

Ian Smith Information (P.O. Box 5893, Sherman Oaks, CA 91413; 818/771-5459) knows this, and is offering its Used Bike Buyer’s Guides to help the discerning buyer make an informed decision about the purchase of any bike manufactured since 1985.

ISI’s reports include reprinted tests and comparisons from Cycle World, Motorcyclist, Rider and the late Cycle magazines.

The cost of The Used Bike Buyers Guide is $10 for a single bike,

$17 for two bikes, $22 for three and $25 for four bikes. There is an additional charge of $5 for the inclusion of comparisons/shootouts.

GETTING THE MEASURE OF "WHEELBASE"

WheelBase, an all-new product that is part car-and-bike magazine and part computer program, is now on line and ready for your home computer. The brainchild of former Cycle magazine staffers Gordon Jennings and Steve Anderson, WheelBase provides access to a variety of information and services, including tests of new cars and bikes, a calendar of events, race reports, classified ads for cars, bikes and parts, and a “bulletin board” that will allow you to ask or answer questions.

For $39.95, a WheelBase subscriber gets a setup disc that provides access to the system’s host computer. Also included are two hours of on-line time. After that, online cost is $12 per hour, billed to your credit card. For more information, contact WheelBase at RO. Box 3066, Paso Robles, CA 934423066; 800/682-8441.

AMA EXPERIENCING RECORD GROWTH

Nationwide membership in the American Motorcycle Association has exceeded 196,000, according to figures released in late July.

“America’s motorcyclists are learning that the AMA is the most cost-effective way of communicating efficiently and successfully with lawmakers at the local, state and federal levels,” said Vice President of Membership Mark Mederski.

For information about the AMA, contact the association’s membership department at 800/AMA-JOIN.

COMINGS AND GOINGS

This edition of Cycle World marks a change to the magazine’s staff. Brian Catterson has resigned to become editor of American Roadracing Magazine. Assuming the position of Managing Editor at Cycle World is Mitch Boehm. Thirtyyear-old Boehm, a talented rider and chassis-setup man, comes to Cl/l/from American Honda, where he worked for three years in the motorcycle press/product evaluation department. Before going to work for Honda, Boehm worked at Motorcyclist, where he was roadtest editor.

FOR THE RECORD

A computer type-setting error in the October issue resulted in two lines being dropped from the conclusion of Associate Editor Don Canet’s “Pro Street Suzuki” story about riding Dale Walker’s 8-second dragbike. The error, which affected only newsstand copies, cut the last sentence, which should have read, “But since Dale Walker is a parts pusher who deals in speed, my fix is just a bruised bank account and a phone call away.” We apologize for the mistake.
