HONDA’S FUEL PUMP MOTOCROSSER

RACE WATCH

With single shocks and watercooling now the standard fare on Japanese production and works bikes, Honda has gone one better with a fuel pump on its latest RC 250-82 works bikes. The pump is a diaphragm type which operates off changing pressure in the engine crankcase. The pump is needed since part of the bike’s gas tank on the right side is extended down beside the engine and the carburetor. The purpose is to lower the bike’s center of gravity for better handling, as well as provide more room fot® extending the seat forward for increased rider control. The use of a fuel pump on a motocross bike could allow the entire gas tank assembly to be lowered from the conventional high mounting position on future model bikes, as well as allow the use of such fuel metering devices as fuel inject tion—Jim Gianatsis
