SAFE INFORMATION
More exciting reading has been written, but for sheer weight and amount of information contained few publications can rival Motorcycle Accident Cause Factors and Identification of Countermeasures. That’s the official title of what has been called the Hurt Report for the last couple of years.
Professor Harry Hurt of the University of Southern California was part of a team that investigated thousands of motorcycle accidents in the Los Angeles area, including 900 involving injury. The team compiled statistics on the crashes, the people involved, the other drivers involved, road conditions and every possible factor that might have contributed to the accidents. The research, funded by the Department of Transportation, has become the standard reference work for many motorcycle safety authorities because of the volume of information provided.
Copies of the 425 page report are now available to the public by sending $25 to Motorcycle Accident Research, USCISSM 114, Los Angeles, Calif. 90007. That price is $5 less than the Department of Transportation charges for the same material, by the way.
