CALIFORNIA STATE TT

Eddie Wirth found Ascot Park’s redesigned course to his liking and led the 15-lap California State TT Championship main event from start to finish.

Trophy Dash winner Jim Odom (Triumph) was favored to win, but fell in the first turn. The race was restarted, but this time Odom was nowhere near the front.

Skip Van Leeuwen (Triumph) ran 2nd until mechanical problems slowed his pace. Odom, charging hard, overtook Van Leeuwen and closed on Wirth (Triumph), but a near spill kept him from taking the lead. Mark Brelsford (H-D) was 4th.

Don Emde (BSA) scored a victory in the Amateur Main. Terry Dorch was 2nd. BSA, by the way, has given Emde a riding contract for next year.

In the Novice Main, Kenny Roberts (Montesa) continued his season-long battle with Gary Scott (Bultaco). Scott won this one and is the new state champion, but Roberts is still leading the overall Novice TT championship.
