THE CANADIAN Motorcycle Association team which was entered in the Winter Rally came through with flying colours. Competing against fourteen other club teams, the C.M.A. team topped the lot in this International car rally over 1300 miles of Ontario's worst winter roads. The members to whom the credit goes are Bill Sharpless, already well known to CYCLE WORLD readers, and his co-driver, enthusiast Wally Henry, driving a Volvo; Johnny Jones, ex-G45 racer and his codriver Lou Lalonde in a Studebaker Lark (factory entered yet!), and Murray Shill, recently returned from racing in England and his co-driver Doug Magee in a Morris 850. Only three of the fifteen teams finished intact, and our team had about half the point total of the second place team.
The National Championship Ice Races were held at Quebec City in perfect 18above-zero weather. The 10,000 paid spec tators were treated to some of the closest racing possible as the entries from Ontario and Quebec battled it out on their spiked tires. The lightweight class up to 250cc was won by Jim Kelly of Hamilton on his Greeves. The 500cc championships were divided into Junior, Senior and Expert classes and the crowd really cheered when Jean-Guy Savard of Quebec won the Jun ior Championship on a BSA. The Senior Championship also went to a Quebec rider, Roger Rouillard, on a BSA.
The Expert Championship was lined up with rivals, Don McHugh from Ontario and Yvon du Hamel of Montreal, the fancied riders. These two have met many times in half-mile track competition and the crowd was all ready for a good race - and they saw one. From the flag these two riders threw ice far behind them as they accelerated away and into the turns. The race was in doubt right `til the final few yards, when Don McHugh managed to pull out a few more stops and crossed the line first, with his BSA in lovely tune.
Four Canadian riders travelled to Day tona for the International U.S. Grand Prix and early information on results showed that Roger Beaumont of Lon gueuil, Quebec, riding Norton, placed third despite having to pit several times with plug trouble. Dave Lloyd of Toronto on a G-50 Matchless placed seventh in the event, but our other two riders, Oliver Howe and John McNeill were out of the running.
News from Finland tells us that Mike Duff was married recently to a Finnish girl, Miss Maj-Britt Kristina Degerlund; we wish Mike and Kris every happiness. •
