LATE NEWS FROM CANADA
BY EVE WHITE
THE participation of eleven Canadian riders in the Daytona A.M.A. races indicates the interest in this event. Don Haddow (Triumph) of Toronto set a new amateur time trial record, riding the identical machine with which Bill Sharpless set the record last year. Sharpless (Triumph), also from Toronto, led the amateur race for over half the distance before being involved in an accident resulting in a broken thigh. Haddow retired with machine trouble, and Denton Craig (BSA) from Ottawa was motoring well in second when his chain seized. However some of our Canadian riders did have better luck as two Montreal BSA riders, Yvon Du Hamel and Steve Kowalyk finished 11th and 19th respectively in the amateur.
In the expert event, Buddy Koehler (BSA) of New Dundee placed an excellent 8th after a most consistent ride with but one very snappy pit stop to take on gas.
Many clubs are thinking seriously of the novice riders, and most events will have special trophies for this class of rider. The Nortown Motorcycle Club is putting a road class in their May 21st races at Harewood to encourage the riders with non-racing machinery to get into the sport. The first road race of the season will be on May 5th at Mosport when the British Empire Motor Club will hold their annual Spring Trophy Races.
There may be riders who would like to have fuller details of the C.M.A. events, or details of membership in the Association. Our address: C.M.A., Box 100, Hollywood P.O., Toronto 18, Ontario, Canada.
At the recent National Executive Committee meeting, it was announced that the C.M.A. has been accepted as an associate member of the Canadian Sports Advisory Council. This group is concerned with raising the standards of physical fitness in the country, and the C.M.A. can certainly play quite a large part in getting people into the open air to participate in motorcycling.
The wide interest in the Isle of Man T.T. races has prompted the C.M.A. to arrange for a flight to take in the practice and race weeks. This would be restricted to members of the association.
