GO BIG? NO, GO MIDSIZED

Big-bore adventure motorcycles have customarily been the rides of choice when crushing miles is of paramount importance to the adventure. Now, Husqvarna’s 2022 Norden 901 is looking to change that. Midsized (displacement creep is real!) ADV mounts usually lean hard on rally dreams and focus on more serious off-road performance. The latest machine from Husky is meant to have a wheel in both camps.

Built on the same platform as the KTM 890 Adventure and Adventure R, the Norden has the pedigree to handle nearly any off-road situation in the right hands. It’s a weapon on dirt roads under just about any rider, with off-road-specific ABS settings and ride modes; the optional Explorer mode allows rear-wheel spin to be dialed in at nine levels. It’s also fitted with Pirelli Rally STR tires, increasing dirt confidence.

And Husqvarna has also wrapped this platform in a stylish and comfy shell. A large front cowl increases protection from the elements, the subframe is set up to accept luggage and provide more passenger comfort than the 901 ’s KTM counterparts, and the rider’s seat is wide and cushy for long days on the road. Rather than using WP’s off-road-focused long-travel Xplor suspension units, the Norden gets WP’s street units, a 43mm Apex fork and shock. It’s as surefooted on the road as it is on the dirt. Cruise control is standard; heated grips and navigation cost extra.

Adventure riders have traditionally given up comfort for off-road capability and lighter weight. Now, with the Norden 901, that all-day comfort is there. Is the need for big and powerful motorcycles for long-haul adventure still relevant? Husqvarna’s Norden 901 is a strong counterargument.
