A Pista GP for (a lot) less

AGV has never been my go-to brand for racetrack testing, due mostly to fit. That changed with the debut earlier this year of the new Pista GP and Corsa, both of which uniquely carry the "Extreme Standards Helmets" designation.

MotoGP legend Valentino Rossi had his head firmly in the development of this flagship design and races in the all-carbon Pista GP ($1,399.95).

But in most ways, the DOT/ECE 2205-certified Corsa is the same lid. Produced in four sizes, the shell is bag molded using less-exotic aramid and carbon fibers known as SSL (Super Super Light) to lower its price.

Forehead vents that slide open and closed (the Pista GP has removable rubber plugs) are another key difference between the two models that makes the Corsa a better choice for savvy street riders. When these vents are open, the cooling effect is truly superb.

Inside, the 3D cheek pads and Lycra-covered variable-density foam in the crown area are identical to materials and shapes used in the Pista GP. Likewise, seams and stitching are hidden to enhance comfort. The chinstrap is a no-nonsense double Dring with a snap-down retainer.

Narrow in the front with an anti-lift rear spoiler designed to pop off in a crash, the Corsa looks as good on the outside as it feels inside. Face-shield removal is quick and easy, yet the 3.3mm-thick lens (available in a variety of tints) locks securely in the closed position. The taller and wider eyeport provides an improved full-tuck vertical line of sight compared to earlier models. In my view, that alone makes the Corsa worthy of its “Extreme Standards” designation.
