Q Recent issues have featured a number of funnels, specialized and universal. While these infundibula no doubt work as advertised, I have trouble spending more on a funnel than the oil that will pass through it. But rather than canceling my subscription, I offer the possibly useful advice that there is a free funnel in every oil bottle or any other

plastic bottle. Take an empty bottle and a sharp knife or scissors, and cut away any part of the bottle that interferes with fit or function. The example here fits snugly against the oil tank, directs drained oil away from the machine and is relieved for fingers to grip the drain plug. It lives in my toolbox and didn’t cost two or three quarts of oil. Buck Pilkenton

A I’ve fabricated (and in some cases, jury-rigged) guite a few makeshift funnels myself over the years, so I am familiar with the concept. But please understand that my inclusion of commercially available funnels was intended only to inform our readers of some unusual or exceptionally functional ones, not to discourage anyone from “rolling their own.” Still, I thank you very much for the useful input—and for not canceling your subscription. Besides, anyone who uses the word “infundibula” to describe a recycled oil bottle is okay in my book.
