LEAVE IT TO THE ITALIANS TO MAKE safety gear look so cool. Dainese's Superfly jacket, in fact, doesn't look like safety gear at all.

Exactly the point. Available in men's chest sizes 36 to 50 in brown 0.8mm-thick cowhide, the stylish Superfly comes standard with easily removable CE-approved composite shoulder and elbow armor, with space for an optional back protector.

While not waterproof, the leather is treated so that it will not be damaged if it becomes wet; light rain beads on the surface rather than soaking into the A leather. A zip-out, quilted, nylon/polyester insulating liner has an interior breast pocket with a dedicated leather cell-phone pouch featuring a velcro holddown strap. Five snaps secure a black neck warmer. Three-position snaps at the wrists and waist cinch openings for draft-free fitting, plus hip-side gusseted zips can expand the jacket bottom if necessary.

Battened down and insulated up, this jacket is very warm and provides excellent draft resistance. Re moval of the liner and neckwarmer loosens fit and cools things off considerably. A zippered interior pocket (but no cell-phone pouch) is incor porated into the permanent, perforated nylon liner. Lack of other forms of venting, however, may deter use in hotter weather. Off bike usability is enhanced by sim ply ditching the armor.

This jacket is good-looking, well-made and is great for every day riding-or not riding. Style and substance that help justify the price.
