FOR THOSE WHO DON’T POSSESS SUPERhuman strength and aren’t able to grip the handlebar of a dirtbike for long periods of time without succumbing to the ride-ruining effects of arm pump, a steering stabilizer is an absolute necessity. At high speeds on rough roads or through deep whoops, a stabilizer will reduce headshake and keep the bike on the straight and narrow. It also helps to cushion kickback from rocks, rain ruts, tree roots and other trail obstacles. Conventional rotary steering dampers do a fine job keeping you on-track and out of danger. The problem stems from the fact that they either sit atop the handlebar in proximity to your vital organs or unattractively above the front fender. Not the GPR V3. Thanks to an internal cavity that countersinks the damper around the motorcycle’s steering stem, the anodized-aluminum V3 tucks neatly under the handlebar out of harm’s way. Once in-
stalledonour2005 Yamaha YZ250 testbike, the increase in bar height was only a quarter-inch-virtually unnoticeable. Another unique feature of the V3 is its remote, grip-shift-style dial that attaches to the clutch side of the bar and permits on-the-fly adjustments without removing your hand from the grip. Turning the dial away from you reduces damping. Spinning it in the opposite direction increases damping. Eight numbered settings provide reference for fine-tuning. Supplied with upper and lower bar perches, post mount and pin, steering nut, machined-aluminum upper tripleclamp and bar pad, the V3 is beautifiilly manufactured and fun to tinker with on the trail. It is particularly useful if you ride or race in varying terrain. At last
year’s Adelanto Grand Prix, for example, we minimized damping for the motocross section, then increased it for the desert portion of the event. Headshake? It’s history. □
