More power, more sound

STOCK IS BEST, RIGHT? WELL, MAYBE half the time. Right out of the box, most dirtbikes are pretty impressive, but who doesn’t enjoy personalizing his machine or giving it a bit more zip?

Consider, for example, the 2005 Yamaha WR450F. Voted Best Enduro Bike in our annual Ten Best balloting, it’s this year’s preeminent off-road ride. Does it really need an aftermarket exhaust insert, such as the Purely Custom Quiet Performance Silencer?

First impressions of the QP weren’t exactly favorable. Beautifully machined and highly polished, it looks like it belongs on a custom cruiser! After a quick, five-minute swap, the “plug-n-play” tip was ready for a trial outing. Before we hit the trail, though, we subjected the QP to a sound test. With the stock exhaust baffle removed, the WR produced 94 dB(a). The QP, meanwhile, registered 97 dB(a), one decibel louder than what is currently legal for off-highway use in the U.S., although anyone who has ever encountered a ranger at a sound-test checkpoint knows there’s some leeway here.
