ROLLING CONCOURS RETURNS
Now in its seventh year, the Cycle World Rolling Concours—where pre-1985 machines compete for show trophies after a 50-mile-plus road run through some of the finest scenery in Americareturns this year to the Honda Hoot in Knoxville, Tennessee, June 22-25. As part of the $40 pre-entry fee, Saturday’s ride includes lunch. You can also join CW editors for Friday’s winding run to the Wheels Through Time Museum in nearby Maggie Valley. For more information and to register for either event, visit www. hondahoot.com.
GREAT SMOKEY CLOSURE
Headed to the Hoot? There may be nothing finer than a summertime ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway through the Appalachian Mountains, but short sections of the road are still closed due to landslides caused by tropical storms last fall. To be sure your route to the Hoot in Knoxville is wide-open (none of the Honda rides are affected), visit the National Park Service website at www. nps.gov/blrl.
FMX EXTREMELY INTERESTING
It must be, because Freestyle Motocross has landed on NBC Sports and the USA Network in the form of the Dew Action Sports Tour. In addition to FMX, the tour also features skateboarding and BMX, as well as other extreme sports chosen for each of the five venues the tour visits around the country during 2005. Further, there is a season-points “Bonus Pool” worth $1 million! Sponsors include Toyota, Panasonic, Vans shoes, PlayStation and Right Guard, all in search of that extremely cool cutting-edge image. The first NBC broadcast from Louisville, Kentucky, is scheduled for June 11, but check your local listings for airtimes.
ROUNDUP
YOU CANTAKE IT WITH YOU
Well, you can take it with you provided your wallet is well-fed. FedEx Custom Critical Passport Auto Transport [www.customcritical.fedex.com ; 800/325-4267) now offers a “Take Your Motorcycle on Vacation” service in the U.S. So if you don’t have time to ride to Sturgis or Daytona Bike Week, FedEx will load your bike in one of the company’s custom, vehicle-specific trailers and deliver it to your destination fueled and ready to ride. Only downside is price: it costs $1350 one way from Los Angeles to Sturgis, for example. Group rates for 12 bikes or more cut this in half, so call your buddies...
POWER TRIP
Here’s a tip: If you run into Hank Booth on the street, don’t challenge him to a run for pink slips. The Great Falls, Montana, resident crushed all comers in the inaugural Dynojet Horsepower Challenge, held in conjunction with the AMA/Prostar Buddy Gregg Bikeweek Nationals this past March in Valdosta, Georgia. Booth’s Arcane Motorsports-backed, NLR-turbochargerequipped Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa churned out a whopping 701 horsepower! Second and third, respectively, in the Imported Unlimited class were the Hayabusas of Richard Peppier (559 hp) and Glen Bertagnoli (445 hp).
