MV’S MALAYSIAN CONNECTION
Cagiva is at a crossroads-again. Deep in debt, it can either focus on specialty brands MV Agusta and Husqvarna or find a partner. The latter option may be the most viable. Proton is said to be interested. Besides financial aid, Cagiva would like to acquire the Malaysian manufacturer’s low-cost, single-cylinder engines to develop a range of smallto medium-displacement machines. Threetime 500cc World Champion and Proton Team KR principal Kenny Roberts brought the two companies together.

He was urged to do so by Franco Lambertini, who was the Italian bike-maker’s chief engineer when Gabriella Morini, daughter of the founder and cousin to Franco, sold out to the Castiglioni brothers, Claudio and Gianfranco. Most assumed Morini did it for sentimental reasons, and that there was no plan to put Moto Morini back in business. But now comes word that a Lambertini-developed 90-degree VTwin is in the works.
