Skabs Pre-Glued Tube Patches

Pick ’em and stick ’em

FLATS SUCK. ACTUALLY, TECHNICALLY speaking, flats blow. Either way, the result is the same, and it ain’t good. Especially when you’re out in the sticks and the glue in your patch kit has dried up. Even when the gooey stuff works, sitting around waiting for it to cure really bites. Well, not anymore.

From the makers of Slime Self-Healing Tubes come Skabs. Designed to repair tubes, they are super-stretchy pieces of polypropolyene film coated with high-peel-strength adhesive. They come in a small zip-lock baggy that includes four 1-inch and two 2-inch patches, plus a piece of sandpaper.

Using Skabs is simple. Just locate the leak, sand the area until it’s rough and clean, then peel off the Skab and stick it on the tube. Press for a few seconds, reinstall the tube, air up and roost on.

Skabs got us back on the trail every time. And

the repairs lasted.

In fact, a few bikes currently in the CW garage have been running Skabbed tubes for months. One minor thing, though: Avoid leaving patched tubes lying around, because pressure between the tube and tire is critical in achieving airtightness. Left on tireless tubes, Skabs held air for only a week before leaking.

Nonetheless, we now keep a pack of Skabs ready to go at all times. Everyone should.
