Ups & Downs
UP: To Jeremy McGrath, for bringing Supercross into the mainstream. Not only did the four-time champ appear on the nationally syndicated TV show "Hardcopy," he also recently was featured on the entertainment news program "Extra." Furthermore, the Canyon Lake, California, resident was given a full page of coverage in the motorsports section of Sports illustrated. Can a segment on "The Tonight Show" be far away?
DOWN: To National Geographic's Boyd Matson, for blowing an assignment. The intrepid host of the magazine's television adventure series recently joined famed off roader Malcolm Smith and singer! songwriter Lyle Lovett on a seven-day tour of southern Chile. Unfortunately, the second day saw Matson crash his KTM and dislocate an elbow. So rather than drink bubbly at ride's end, he watched Smith and Lovett on the internet from his home in California. Better luck next time, Boyd.
UP: To the American Motorcyclist Association, for supporting a woman's right to choose...to go racing! At its recent 30th Annual Congress, the AMA resolved to encourage women's motocross racing on local and national levels. Putting its money where its mouth is, the AMA added two new classes to the 1998 AMA Amateur & Youth National Motocross Championships at Loretta Lynn's Ranch, one for younger females on 80cc machines, and an "A" level class for women on 125cc bikes. Does this mean the AMA has given new import to the term "Pro choice?"
