Ups & Downs
UP: To Barbie, for gettin’ an attitude! Dissatisfied with her reputation for being a typical beach bimbo, Barbie has donned leathers—with a little help from the Motor Company. Outfitted in authentic H-D apparel, this limited-edition Harley Barbie comes complete with sunglasses, a leatherette saddle-bag and chain-festooned belt buckle (no mention, though, of optional tattoos). At $60, bikin’ Babs doesn’t come cheap. She’s available at Toys ‘R’ Us and select Harley-Davidson dealers. Definitely not your mother’s Barbie doll.
DOWN: To the cruel twist of fate that saw likable Gordon Lunde Jr. perish in a roadracing accident during the recent WERA Grand National Finals at Road Atlanta. Ironically, the 28-yearold’s father, Gordon Lunde Sr., is founder and president of the Russ Wegman Benefit Fund, a charity organization that provides financial assistance to injured racers and their families. Donations in Gordon Lunde Jr.’s name can be sent to the Wegman Benefit Fund, 3212 N. 92nd St., Milwaukee, Wl 53222. Cycle World's sympathies go out to the Lunde family.
UP: To England’s Barbican Art Gallery, for recognizing true masterpieces. Kicking off the London gallery’s year-long “Inventing America” exhibition is “The Art of the Harley,” featuring 30 customized Hogs. Among the included bikes: replicas of Lee Marvin’s Wild One bob-job and Peter Fonda’s Easy Rider chopper; Arlen Ness’ outrageous “Two Bad” and “Ferrari Bike;” and ZZ Top’s “Hogzilla.” The exhibition runs from January 22 to April 26, and is sponsored by Warr’s Harley-Davidson, Europe’s oldest H-D dealership.
