Held Profi 2277 Gloves
CW EVALUATION
When cost is no object
PERHAPS $160 IS A BIT MUCH FOR A pair of motorcycle gloves. After all, the market is rife with comfortable, relatively protective mitts costing less than half that, and they usually resemble something other than welding wear.
Held’s Profi 2277 gloves may be pricey and a bit bulky, but they were developed to safeguard delicate digits at high speeds, over unforgiving surfaces, amidst conditions most motorcyclists likely will never suffer. Which is why many top roadracers favor them, even if said riders are also sponsored by higher-profile leather makers.
In the case of the top-of-the-line Profis, kangaroo hide, coupled with Suprotect foam and kevlar, forms a seemingly impregnable barrier around the pre-curved fingers, tops of the hands, palms and wrists. The downside, of course, is the apparent bulk, but because kangaroo skin is so soft
and supple, break-in time is negligible. Even delicate tasks, such as fishing a gas card from your wallet, are a cinch.
Other distinguishing features include the oversized gauntlets, which run nearly halfway up the outside edges of the wearer’s forearms. Impact-absorbing
foam is positioned strategically over the forearm and wrist bones, and velcro closures-one atop the wrists, the other nearer the gauntlets’ ends-secure the gloves. Once they’re on, they’re on.
Negatives are few. Seams are inter nal, which can foul fingertips, and the lightly colored palms darken with use. There's no color-bleeding when wet, though, and after drying, the leather doesn't crack or lose its trade mark suppleness.
Based on their asking price alone, the German-made Profis aren't for everyone. Those who favor fashion over substance, for example, might look elsewhere. If, however, you ap preciate attention to detail, Old-World craftsmanship and, above all, premium protection, little else will suffice.
