25 YEARS AGO JULY, 1971

Although Assistant Editor Jody Nicholas was pictured on the cover full-lock and flying at the Sacramento Mile, the big story of this issue was summarized in the lead coverline: "Honda CB350-The road bike you are most likely to buy." The blurb-writer's premonition was correct: Americans bought 65,720 of the $735 Twins that year.

• The cover shot accompanied a test of the Allison-Norton 750 (on which Nicholas took three wins) and another piece that explored flat track's uniquely American heart and soul. Stressing the sport's intensity, Senior Editor Dan Hunt's acutely detailed ac count informed readers that, "The riders themselves get quite emo tional. Gary Nixon flares his nos trils more at a good flat-track than he does at a roadrace." • A couple of significant firsts took place in the racing world around this time: The Brits won the inaugural Anglo-American Match Races held at three different British roadrace tracks, with Dick Mann taking top American honors in third overall. And Gunnar Lind strom won the first Daytona Su percross on a track designed by Gary Bailey, who finished third that day, and who still maps out the course between Daytona's tn-oval and the pits. • On the lighter side, a full-page ad told of a new movie called On

Any Sunday, while another for a book titled Learn To Wheelie boasted a money-back guarantee. Could this have been where Wheelie King Doug Domokos learned his trade?
