LOOKING FOR A LITTLE MORE PERFORmance from your liquid-cooled Suzuki GSX-R? Tweaking the ignition timing may be a good place to start.
One method of altering timing is to replace the stock ignition rotor with a preset aftermarket advancer. For fine tuning your engine’s ignition timing to best suit its specific needs, an adjustable Timing Plate from DeChellis Machine (3122 Maple St., Santa Ana, CA 92707; 714/549-441 1 ) is a better approach.
DeChellis’ Timing Plate has precision-cut slotted mounting holes. These holes allow quick and easy static timing adjustment over a 16-degree range (-6 to +10 degrees from stock). The step-by-step installation instructions made fitting the plate on our long-term '93 GSX-R750 a trouble-free, 30minute task, requiring only a lew Allen wrenches, a couple of screw drivers and a feeler gauge to complete the job. A pair of socket head cap screws were included as replacements for the stock Phillips-head screws that secure the plate to the engine case.
We performed back-to-back runs on the Cycle World dyno, first with the standard timing then again with +3 and +5 degrees advance, on our otherwise stock, 49-state GSX-R. (Much more than that would likely result in detonation with pump gas. Retarding the timing is generally recommended only for use with nitrous oxide or turbochargers.) Advancing the timing 5 degrees improved bottom-end power by 9 footpounds, filling in a pronounced dip in the torque curve between 3000 and
4000 rpm. This may not equate to faster lap times or improved quartermile acceleration, but the result is smoother stoplight getaways and better aro un d -1 own r i da b i 1 i ty.
DeChellis Adjustable Ignition Advancer Plates are available for 199294 Suzuki GSX-R600, 750 and 1100 for $38 direct from DeChellis Machine. Few performance gains come as easily and inexpensively as this.
