BMW'S LATEST BOXER READY NOW
BMW IS SET TO ADD ANother streetfighter to its stable of new Boxers. The standard-style R1100R will debut in mid-November.
As is the case with the dualpurpose R1100GS, the R model’s engine makes a claimed 80 horsepower at 6750 rpm and 71 foot-pounds of torque at 5250 rpm. The high-rise exhaust from the GS is also used on the RI 100R.
One mechanical difference from the GS and RI 100RS is that, rather than having a single oil cooler below the headlight, the new roadster gets two small coolers, one mounted above each cylinder. Seat height, at 29.9 inches, is about an inch lower than that of the RS, more than 3 inches lower than that of the GS.
Prices for the RI 100R are also lower than the other models. Without ABS the RI 100R will retail for $9900; adding anti-lock braking boosts the price to $11,290. A tachometer and spoked wheels are among the other options.
Europeans can opt for an 850cc version of the R, which marks the first appearance of a smaller eight-valve Boxer engine. An R850GS is expected in 1995. -Robert Hough
