CW CONCOURS D'ELEGANCE
STARS OF THE SHOW
No X-75 HURRICANE SIGHTINGS, but 80 other classic, custom and collectible motorcycles were on display at the inaugural Cycle World Concours d’Elegance, held in conjunction with the CW-sponsored L.A.
Superbike race last April.
Engraved glass-and-marble trophies were awarded in each of 14 classes after a final judging session during which participants were asked to start their machines. Judging the event were Cycle World's Paul Dean, David Edwards and Matthew Miles, and former Daytona 200 winner Don Emde, now publisher of Motorcycle Collector magazine. Larry “Supermouth” Huffman made the announcements and interviewed winners.
Culmination of the Concours was the presentation of special awards. Best of Show honors went to Virgil Elings, owner of an ex-Mike Hailwood Honda 500 Four, the infamous 1967 model that Honda forbade Mike the Bike from riding in GPs, even though its British-built frame gave better handling than the wobbly made-in-Japan version. One of the rarest motorcycles in the world and a fitting winner of the Cycle World Concours. □
