UPS AND DOWNS

UP: To the Saturn Corporation, makers of Saturn automobiles, for its advertisement featuring an offroad motorcyclist. Mark LaRouche, a 30-year-old Ph.D. candidate and veteran motocrosser, is shown perched on the trunk of a Saturn sedan in full motocross attire with his Yamaha YZ490 at his side. According to Hal Riney & Partners, the firm responsible for developing the ad, LaRouche "illustrated the type of person Saturn is marketing: young, active, educated consumers."

DOWN: To bad luck, for being less than fair to Australian roadracer Wayne Gardner. At the Japanese Grand Prix, the 1987 500cc World Champion crashed heavily, break ing his right leg in five places, one break reportedly being a compound fracture. Over the past three sea sons, the 32-year-old Gardner has broken both legs, several ribs and a number of bones in his feet.

Though he may return to battle, re tirement seems more likely. In the interim, Gardner will be replaced on the Rothmans-sponsored NSR500 by fellow Australian Daryl Beattie. Hopefully, Beattie, who finished third in his premier ride at the Aus tralian G~ will enjoy better fortune than his countryman.

UP: To MTV~ for its television cover age of the New York motorcycle show. A crew from the cable music video channel filmed several spots at the International Motorcycle Show, held at the Jacob Javits Con vention Center. One of the clips fo cused on the Cycle World Readers' Collection Series.
