The Hawk’s Nest

DESTINATIONS

Port Jervis, New York

IF IN YOUR MIND'S EYE, THE HIGHways of The Empire State resemble those potholed war zones of New York City, forget it; the rest of the state has some real riders' roads, some of them not all that far from the city.

One of the best is State Highway 97, a sweeping, swooping stretch of asphalt that follows the twists and turns of the Delaware River from Port Jervis, about 75 miles northwest of New York City, to Hancock, another 60 miles to the northwest. This section of the river defines the border between New York and Pennsylvania, and contains some of the most beautiful scenery the state has to offer. But if you’re hard to please and this portion of the trip doesn't already have you reaching for your six-pack of superlatives, the Hawk’s Nest will.

A piece of road just a few miles long, immediately out of Port Jervis, what the Hawk's Nest lacks in length, it makes up for in quality. Blasted into the granite mountains that line the river, the Nest is composed of a series of challenging corners. with solid rock on one side and a spectacular drop on the other.

After you run it a few times, you can stop at its far end for a bite to eat at. of course, the Hawk’s Nest Restau rant.

Great ride, great view, good food. What could be better?
