Shobert Fights Back
ROUNDUP
THREE-TIME U.S. GRAND NAtional Champion Bubba Shobert's racing career remains in jeopardy after a tragic, post-race crash at the Laguna Seca U.S. Grand Prix (see “Top Ten,”pg.50).
Shobert, 28, was flown unconscious from the track to the San Jose (California) Medical Center and treated for severe head injuries, a broken right thumb and a fractured left scapula. He remained in a coma for seven days, but had improved enough by the 10th day to be moved from intensive care to a private room, where his recovery progressed at a rate that surprised his doctors.
As of two weeks after the accident, Shobert was speaking and moving his arms, legs and head. Nonetheless, before this issue went to press, doctors were reluctant to offer a prognosis for Shobert’s recovery because they were still unable to determine the full extent of his injuries.
Because of the outpouring of affection shown by the large amounts of mail from fans, the hospital has been overwhelmed, and Don Shobert, Bubba’s father, said, “We want to thank everyone who has called or sent cards to Bubba.
It’s hard to express how much we appreciate everyone’s concern.”
Shobert’s premier Cycle World column, GP Notebook, went to press just before the accident, and now will be on hold until he recovers. Meanwhile, those who want to express their encouragement for Shobert’s recovery can send cards and letters to: Bubba Shobert, Motorcycle Sports Department, American Honda, 100 W. Alondra Blvd., Gardena, CA 90248.
